Creative Blocks and How-To Manage Them

As an Artist, creative and visionary—I have my fair share of creative blocks from time to time. Any Artist can certainly understand this frustration as it can stagnate and even cause worry in regards to how to move past it. A creative block can feel like hitting a brick wall; not knowing how to move past it, sometimes creating doubts that further undermine our ability to create.

Artists, you’re not alone, as we all experience this feeling from time to time. In some cases, it can make us question the reality of our aspirations. The various flood of thoughts can undermine ones’ ability and confidence:

“is this even worth it?”

“what if i’m wasting my time and my art won’t get noticed?”

“Why am I not seeing the fruits of my labor flourish?” etc.

It’s easier said than done to break past a creative block and focus on a positive-centric approach—especially when you’re sensitive about your art. The good news is that you’re not alone, as many experience the same feelings and/or thoughts, leaving some of us confused and uncertain. However, the ability to move past such blocks in fact enhance our creativity and drive to overcome the doubts one has about their art.

When feeling as though you’ve been in a period of creative-blockage, take a step back from everything and re-evaluate not only your mindset but circumstances. The worst thing an artist can do to themselves is sulk into their own pity as to why they feel as though they can’t move past the stagnation.

Center yourself and go for a walk. Now, when you’re on this walk, think back to when you first began your creative pursuits. Why did you start in the first place? Who inspired you? Why did they inspire you and what was their journey like?

You see, in taking a step back and clearly sorting through the feelings you may be experiencing, remind yourself that you are only human. Even your idols and most-well known artists’ have gone through creative blockages and trials of their own but their ability to overcome them with power of the mind, put them in the position they’re at today. Think about that.

Regardless of the blockages and stagnation they were and/or have experienced, the purpose of their art helped them to push through and overcome all hurdles they’ve faced. Most of the time, the creative blockages artists’ experience originates from its’ source: you. Your own mind, thought patterns, and comparison to others, creates those creative blockages you feel you may not be able to overcome (that’s also your mind playing tricks on you).

Realize this: it is inevitable. If it weren’t for obstacles, the experience of stagnation and blockages, we certainly wouldn’t be nearly as strong and creative as we are today. In fact, a creative block can inspire and uplift us to see the whole picture for what it is. It’s what truly makes a piece of art, a masterpiece. The recognition of “I know I may be experiencing a block or feeling I don’t want to be a part of, but it is what will enhance my ability to overcome and make the masterpiece what it truly is”.

I am certain many of us are aware of how a diamond, becomes a diamond; much pressure. As an Artist, look at your situation from a third persons point-of-view. Often, when someone is feeling down and is experiencing a blockage, most try to do their best to make that person feel better and see the whole picture instead of a minor setback. That is how you must treat yourself and view your own situation. Easier said than done, I know. However, Art does not come easy and not everyone has the ability and talent you have. Overcoming a creative-blockage simply begins with the mind… believe it or not, you are in control of how you think. Though many may scoff at that statement, it is only when we allow ourselves to sulk into a state of pity do we allow negative thoughts to flood our minds.

Start by saying in your mind “ I am (your name)” a few times or as many times as you’d like to gain a sense of control and power. Now remind yourself of why you began your artistry in the first place, the mission of your art and the message you aspire to send out into the world. You may even write it out on paper if you’re more-so a visionary. Though getting past a creative-blockage may not take overnight, or maybe even a few days to overcome—know that it is only temporary. Now, get back to finishing your masterpiece; if it wasn’t for that creative blockage, you art wouldn’t be as powerful and meaningful as it is today.
