Intro to Psychology Vol. 1
As an intellectual and pragmatic thinker, psychology has always been of great interest to me. My mother attended OSU for psychology while I was in middle school and her professors would allow me to sit in class, as I was homeschooled.
Put simply, psychological understanding is indefinitely contingent on following up on the inquiry of Epistemology: How do we know what we know?
The term Psychology is a Greek term for: Study of the Soul; whereas Psychiatry is a Greek term for: Soul Healing.
Moreover, Psychology is a science. Scientific methods, experiments and statistics are used to back up thesis’. Psychologies ultimate goal is to understand human behavior objectively and in its’ entirety. Psychology correlates to: Philosophy, Biology and Neuroscience.
Psychology helps us to understand and answer the many questions that make us who we are and assists us in understanding where we are going. We are not always aware of what is happening in our conscious and subconscious minds. Perception research tells us that the world we inherently experience is not necessarily the same or similar to reality. In actuality, our minds and psychological makeup defines us as humans.
Everything you see and go through depends on a psychological process which then can be influenced by experience and expectations. This is why I suggest those around me to develop insight and understanding of themselves and also the groups of people we interact with.
As Cognitive Dissonance (theory) states: “We learn that any of our ordinary, everyday decisions are irrational and that we often act without really knowing why. Learning and conditioning are about unconscious processes. Sometimes equally unaware of how we’ve been influenced.”
As a matter of fact, Psychology helps you gain a broader and better understanding of those around you. While getting a better grasp of understanding the people around you, you also get personal insight into your own thoughts, behaviors and emotions.
In the coming articles regarding the study of Psychology, I’ll dive into each area of expertise and the history behind Psychology.
